Navigating the Bell Aliant Learning Centre Once you have created your account and logged in to the site, you can search by grade, grade range, curriculum, province, keywords and subject. You can also browse videos by grade, curriculum, province and subject. The video programs are organized into three broad categories: School These categories each have their own feature page and can be selected in a number of ways. The Navigation Bar at the top of the page provides a link to each of the categories:
Clicking on a category (School, Home, and Business) will take you to the Feature page for that category. For example, clicking on the School link will take you to this page:
There are four Feature videos presented on this page. Clicking on “More” will display a listing of related videos in the same subject area as the feature title. Clicking on “Play Video” or the thumbnail image will launch the selected video in the Player. Also, there is side Navigation Bar on the left of all pages.
Clicking on one of the sub-categories (Primary Education, Intermediate Education, and Senior Education) will expand the menu to show all subjects under that sub-category. The number beside each subject indicates the number of programs currently available for each subject.
The Video Player launches in a separate window:
To the right of the video is the video “index”, or list of video Chapters or Video Segments. These Chapters allow easy navigation of the video program; simply click on any title to go directly to that segment of the program. The program will continue to play from that point until the video ends or you select another Chapter. Below the video is a range of related videos; clicking on any of these thumbnail images will launch that video in the player. Below that, you can click “Full Screen” to choose full screen playback of the video. Click “Close Player” to close the video player. Searching the Bell Aliant Learning Centre There are two ways to search the video collection. The side Navigation Bar provides a quick way to simply enter keywords and search the entire collection:
In this example, a user has entered the keyword “atoms”:
After clicking the “Go” button, the results are displayed in the main page:
You can enter more than one word and the search will return results that contain all of the words entered. If the words are placed in quotations, for example “cell structure”, the search will only return results that contain the exact phrase as entered. All relevant results are displayed with an image thumbnail, program description, year of production and a link to ”Play Video”. Alternately, you can click the thumbnail image to play the video. The second method is to select Search from the top Navigation Bar:
This will take you to the Curriculum Correlation search page;
This innovative feature provides a way to find video content tied to specific Curriculum outcomes for each Atlantic province. There is a series of drop-down menus to narrow a search by Grade range, specific province, and specific subject. In the following example, the user has selected a Grade range of 2 to 6, the province of New Brunswick, and the subject “Mathematics”:
The Strand details the specific learning outcome, Programs indicates the number of programs tied to that Strand, and clicking the Details button takes you to this page:
Clicking on the thumbnail image or the program title will launch the Video Player. To the right of the title and description is a Curriculum Correlation link. Clicking that link will take you to the Curriculum details for that program:
Public Performance Rights (PPR) Under The Copyright Act of Canada, any viewing or exhibition of a video in a public place (schools and libraries are considered public places) must have Public Performance Rights.
